Professor John Mellor
Professor John Mellor, Chairman and Founder, is the recent holder of the Chair in Governance in Banking and Finance at the University of Leicester School of Business.
He was an international corporate banker with over 20 years' experience in banking and finance, principally with Citicorp/Citibank as a Vice President and head of global banking teams, chief of staff for Citibank's Head of Europe, Middle East and Africa, and a regional head in the UK. From the time of the 1992 Cadbury Report on Corporate Governance, he has achieved recognition as an authority on governance through roles in management consultancy as a director of the UK Partnership of IIC (International Independent Consultants) and head of the board governance practice, and as well, in 1997, as founder and director of the Non-Executive Directors' Forum with the University of Exeter and sponsorship from NatWest Bank. In this role he pioneered education for non-executive directors, establishing and directing a case study based programme with a faculty of directors, lawyers, investment managers and academics. In 2008 he founded FGRE, a not-for profit organisation, to partner the University sector and provide a focus for governance research combining academic and practical input, and to support director and executive education. His recent work on governance in banking and finance, coupled with a wide range of senior City contacts stemming from his role as banker, has resulted in a particular focus on financial sector governance, culture and regulation.
His authorships include City-sponsored research reports on stewardship and engagement published by FGRE, chapters in books on private and public sector governance, and articles for professional journals. A second edition of his book “Practical Corporate Governance for Smaller Quoted Companies” was published by Jordans in 2013, following an initial publication in 2008.
Professor Mellor has presented seminars on governance to a variety of audiences including practitioners, academics and postgraduate students. He has been an adviser to the UK government on the role of non-executive directors and board practice. He has held academic positions as visiting lecturer on banking governance at BPP University College, NatWest Visiting Senior Fellow in Corporate Leadership at the University of Exeter, and Visiting Professor of Corporate Governance at Bristol Business School, as well as Professor in Governance at the University of Leicester. He is a graduate of the University of Exeter (BSc), a PhD from the University of Bristol (in chemistry), and a Cranfield School of Management MBA.
Chris Leslie spent the first 18 years of his career in banking with Citicorp/Citibank in London, Dublin, and New York. His last position at the bank was heading up its corporate and specialised financing businesses in the UK.
For the last 25 years, Chris has been in executive search, working initially on senior executive appointments in banking and financial services, where he was part of a small team that built Whitehead Mann into the leading executive search firm in the UK. For the last 10 years, both at Whitehead Mann and latterly The Zygos Partnership, he has focused almost exclusively on chairman and non-executive director appointments in financial services.
He holds an MA in French and Economics from St Andrews University and has attended the Programme for Management Development at Harvard Business School.
